[Thai drama] ‘Grey Rainbow’ ep 1- 4 [END] ~ review/impression/opinion~

I stared watching this show because the poster looked good and intriguing.  Then I thought it will be the usual BL story however Gray Rainbow is more than that. Most stories are full of fan service and random kisses and rarely have an actual story to tell to it viewers. However, this one turned out to be complicated as we as viewers witness sexual assault and the struggles of a University student trying to accept himself.

Rather than a gay movie, we get to understand the characters to a new level and I was surprised to see the good cinematography that helped the drama have a whole new vibe. As most shows tend to look cheap, Gray Rainbow had a certain quiet aura that settles fast into our mind making us be part of the story, but as mere witnesses cornered by a glass wall.

Not only Porsche struggles with accepting the fact that he is gay, the traces of a sexual assault remain vivid in his mind giving him nightmares. On the other hand, Nuer, Porsche’s roommate and friend, doesn’t understand what happened to him or why he keeps locking himself away from other people. (Just to mention this: the sexual assault didn’t “turn” him gay.)

“I miss you….I miss you….I miss you. I miss you a hundred times more than you could imagine.”

The acting of the two main actors was alright in the beginning. As the show progressed, the story went forward and their relationship entered a new phase, both felt somehow awkward but it wasn’t anything irritating. However, the writing after the second half of the show didn’t help them at all. The writer did try to make something different and until a certain point, it actually did, however after episode 3, everything was rushed and felt unbalanced. A lot of elements were included in the last episode which made me feel bothered because this could’ve been way better if the peace remained as in the beginning yet making the story move slowly.

The ending was surprising. I already knew that something was going to happen as I read the comments beforehand, but I wasn’t expecting what happened. Especially because the show gave me hints, and it was like I already was told that something is going to happen even so I was upset that I didn’t give the story and its characters more importance and attention as I was watching drama to notice those hints. The definitely ending made me realize that.

Although the way it ended made me dumbfounded, after a couple of hours I started to understand what the writer wanted to convey.

I didn’t want to say too much in this review, mostly because I will unveil the story, the meaning and I will spoil the fun. However, I highly recommend this 4 episode drama. Watch it and afterwards come back to talk together about the meaning of those hints. But, please, don’t do like I did. Pay attention and you’ll love it more.

  1. This sounded like something I would enjoy so I’ve watched the first two episodes. I had seen the title in my wanderings but never gave it a try. I’m glad that I did – I like it so far. I’ll be back whe I’ve finished it. Thank you for recommending it.

    1. Glad you’re liking it. Come back after you finish the drama to talk about it together XD

      1. I didn’t expect the ending of the story… there is no forever except our love

  2. What kind of an ending is that? Ahhhhh They were so cute together TT_TT

    1. IKR? That’s how I was feeling when I saw the ending but then I started thinking that rather than making everything perfect, since it life nothing is perfect, the director and writer used a rather realistic feel to it. Plus, there were hints about it throughout the drama and I didn’t paid enough attention to the details 😦

      1. i do not agree to the realistic ending love… Who exercises everyday and maintain a healthy lifestyle and still dies out of heart attack? lol 😀

    2. But how was the drama? Did you like it ? XD

This grey rainbow i had watched for more than 10 times and still planningnto watch it over and over…

  3. I liked it very much. I’m a fan of BL but most live action dramas are not that good. But this one had rather high production values and the actors were pretty good too. I missed the cues. I noticed them at first but then just ignored them LOL I became engrossed in the development of their relationship and let the little hints slip past me. It did have a realistic feel. I liked the way the parents responded to the news, how they dealt with it. The beautiful scenery and the elephants really added to the story. After I thought about for awhile I liked the “matter of fact” feeling of the ending. No scenes of funerals or crying, just those left behind moving on with their lives but not forgetting their loved one. Of course he’ll stay, raise the child and live with the parents, he wouldn’t consider anything else. I liked that part of him. I envied his ability to “see” his partner beside him the way he saw the girl. Quite a gift that would be. I rambled – sorry 😀

    1. It felt that they added to ways of responding to the news by the different response for the parents. Both pairs had different first hit with the news so it was like they showed us the shock but afterwards the ‘this is my child and there’s nothing wrong with him’

The parts with him moving away with his life but at the same time continuing to ‘live’ with Nuer it was so beautifully portrayed. I actually liked that there was no funeral, I think that would’ve messed a bit the flow and the feelings we got from this drama.

Because I watched it with subtitles, I might have missed some of the action, but I loved this movie! Being from North America, it was a breathe of fresh air to see a relationship develop that wasn’t all gay-haters and AIDS issues. The ending shocked a great deal, as I was expecting a “happily ever-after” ending, and I must admit I cried. Watching this mini series was wonderful. I know nothing about Thai culture, and despite that, I was able to enjoy the movie and many of the subtle plots of the story. I just wish there was a documentary on the making of this series that might help foreigners like myself better understand the “behind the scenes” motivation for such a movie. Maybe I will be able to a DVD (with the subtitles) and a commentary (with subtitles).

    1. I’m so happy that more and more people are watching this show. It was such a well done story, even the ending was ok (after a few days XD ).

The only flaw of Grey Rainbow is that it only has 4 episodes. It should’ve been longer.

Some bts would be awesome especially interviews with the writer and the director.

Thank you so much for the comment, hopefully others will give this show a chance even if they are a fan of the plot or not.

      1. Amen on the ”it should have been a longer series…”

I downloaded all episodes (1-4). I don’t understand that during the wedding, Nuer suddenly died without any part showing his health condition. I watched the last episode last night but until now it breaks my heart. Such a beautiful story and I can’t move on of what happened…It made me cry

    1. That was my reaction when I saw the last episode, I tho that they didn’t give us any prior hints, but they actually did.

Definitely a great show. I wish it had more episodes. The two actors also did well.

Still not over this drama…. T_T

      Thanks for the comment ~

      1. Hi, I don’t get the hints 😦
        Can you elaborate?

    2. If I’m not mistaken, they gave us a hint in ep. 2 or ep. 3 that Porsche dreamt about Nuer’s death. At that time, I didn’t notice it as a clue, I thought it was just a nightmare. After I realized that the nightmare came true. 😢😢😢

  6. the best LGBT themed series so far!! just finished the last episode and im re-watching it to tie up the significance of the ending towards the entire script.

I was mind blown !! so many subtle cues like madame butterfly, and Ms. Intervenor.

All their words have a different meaning when you already know the ending.

    1. I’m so happy seeing more and more people watching this show. Such a well done show, especially in the writing department.
I’m not well knowledged regarding LGBT community but I felt that this drama was more than the usual fanservice. It had an actually story to be told.

I agree with you, the dialogues have a different feel after you know the ending. And everything makes sense.

Thank you for the comment ^^

Can i suggest? you can watch “addicted (heroin) – a chinese BL drama ; and “Sotus” – another Thai BL drama”

Addicted was completed with 15 short episode,s while as of this date, Sotus has 3 more episodes to go. these are good series for me and add Grey Rainbow to my list.

speaking of which, i cant help but watch the 4 episodes over and over again just to know exactly where his condition started to have an ending like that. all i could find is porsche having a dream about it, nothing more. Nuer seemed fit and healthy and all but yeah, that happened. can anyone help me identify why the author decided to end the story this way? thanks a lot!

  7. Did they actually give hints of nuer’s health condition? Maybe yes, though I did not seen it maybe I was more focused on the subtitled. There were few questions I had in mind especially in the last episode. Hope I find a link to for me to read the and be enlightened.

    1. Go on to the Grey Rainbow page on MDL, the person who did the subtitles wrote about the hints and it makes a lot of sense after reading that post.

I also didn’t see the hints at first, but then I re-watched some scenes and I started to get the story more.

      Thank you for the comment~

      1. Thank you for the reply.but could you give me the link please? I was really moved by the story itself but got confused at the 4th episode and leaves me some questions…

      2. I can’t find their page 😦 can you also send ne the link of the movie. Thank you

      3. Please go on My Drama List and search for Grey Rainbow and you will fin it there.

I love and hate the show in the same time. I love how realistic and how vivid the story was potrayed but at the same time, I hate it… cause they “kill” Nuer and left Porsche alone… I mean, they just able to be together for few months and Nuer died… T.T Btw, the clue of Nuer’s death was in one of Porsche’s dream right? I did remember, there was a scene of Porsche’s dream but I dont quite get it in the first place. And about the blood transfusion, as much as I know, AB people can receive any blood type, but of course the same group would be better. The most rare blood type is actually O negative. And had to remove her lung due to dengue? Never seen one before… but they have to “kill” her anyway… and the most great about this story, no sex scene… it would be great but in my opinion it would make the show looked cheap. And I agree with you that episode 4 was rather too fast. The plot developed to fast that I was unable to appreciate enough their relationship. But above all, the emotional impact on the audience is so great and I cant move on from Nuer’s death. Plus, I watched this series during my study week… what a mixed feeling!

    1. They did imply that the two had sex but it didn’t show that scene and I’m actually glad they didn’t. I liked the way the story was portrayed and I agree with you, a sex scene would’ve ruined the flow.

A small note regarding the blood type. The rarest blood type is actually AB. AB negative being the rarest between AB negative and AB positive. I’m an AB positive and I can receive blood transfusions from every other blood type however AB negative can receive only from negative blood types. AB blood types are potential universal plasma donors. But as far as I remember they didn’t mention if she was negative or positive.

Thank you for the comment and I’m glad you liked the story. ^^

  9. Yeah..thats why I really appreciate the story itself. .Its no ordinary story..Yes I am.really sad that they killed Nuer…I also like how porshe see the girl, Ice as if she is real person.I never thought in the 1st three episode. 🙂

(Ps: might be spoiler alert.) I didnt knw what to react. I cried at the end after ep4. I like the ending part. Lots of teaching esp abt the LGBT’s life and a lil bit abt laws hahahaha. But overall, i’m truly blessed by it and the message tht they try to convey, it really hit the button in me. And i cried again. Gosh compare to love sick or waterboy or bromance, this grey rainbow is among the best BL.
    Cons:-
    1) too short. If make it long, many message can be convey.
    2) they didnt tell what happen to nuer and jane at the end.

    1. I liked Love Sick but it was pure fan service and the problem of LGBTQ weren’t discussed at all. Grey Rainbow on the other hand, had a purpose.

Nuer died in the end. They used a bad moment, the wedding, but during the ending parts, all was only in P’s mind.

Thank you for the comment ~

  11. About the movie. I really thought there is forever. But its not!

    1. Sadly it’s not. But just because one died, it doesn’t necessary mean the end. Nuer will live forever and their love as well as long as Porsche will think about him.

Thank you for the comment ^^

  12. i cannot move on with this series. i tried searching for all other videos related to this mini movie. isnt there any part 2 of the series or any other movie that the 2 actors are in? they conveyed each role excellently. last time bkk love story and love of siam were my favorite, now this is the best. kudos to the actors and the writer.

    1. Glad you liked the drama. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if the two actors had any other project.

      Thank you for the comment~

I watched over and over again for the hint that Nuer had heart problem – I actually watched about 6 times – but still did not catch the hint.
I will appreciate if someone can explain to me why Porsche say that Nuer is impolite when Nuer asked him to promise not to leave him even if Porsche meet a better man..

      2. Read the post made by one of the subbers on My Drama List. She/he explains the hints and a lot of other things regarding the subject of the show. There are way better explained than I could ever say.

The plot is amazing…. Still can’t get over it…. The emotion is so intense & the story is so real, almost anyone can connect to it…… Just my opinion, if the writer can bring up issues like marriage certificate among gay is not legal but it means a certified bond among P & N, gay wedding ceremony attended by friends & family, parents approval of gay relationship plus even a ‘daughter’ to make the gay family complete……. Why not end the movie with happily ever after without ‘killing’ Neur…… His sudden death doesn’t bring justice to the fact that gay marriage can be forever……

    1. If it were to make it a ‘happy ending’ maybe the writer was thinking that it won’t be too realistic. However, just because they are not physically together doesn’t mean that their love vanished. We could see it in the last part of the show that as long as P will think of N then N will always live.

But yes, I agree, by killing him it doesn’t give justice to the story.

Thank you for the comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the show~

  14. I’m from Singapore and had watched many Thai gay related series. This one is the best so far, apart from LOVE1008. The two actors portrayed the characters very well. First time I watched the ending I was very upset and but as I watched the series over again, actually watched 5 times so far, I realized that well such ending can prove gay can also be faithful partners. The script writer should have at least hinted some health issues instead of the bombshell effect. Overall a very very high rating for the story line and the good acting

    1. Haven’t watched LOVE1008, would you recommend this one?

They did hint about his illness, I wasn’t paying attention when I first watched the show, but if you watch again, you will see that they did give some hints here and there

Thank you for the comment, I’m glad you liked the show

      1. What is Love 1008? i cannot find anything from Google.

its been 2 days from now that i can’t move on in this series. the story is always in my mind asking many question, until now it breaks my heart and i’m so affected to happened to nuer . why they do that. that nuer died, it is so sad 😥 I thought in first episode it will be a happy ending but it is not. Remember the dream of porsche that nuer is died ,I thought he was shoot bye there enemy (in public river) but it is not.
why the writer didn’t give a hint in nuer’s health condition.? i wish that nuer did not die so that they have happy ending with porsche (FOREVER). when the time that porsche snap i thought it was a surprise but it is not. im the one who surprise happened to nuer’s .this series is always in my mind the happy moments, the way they hurt and jealous, and the most part that i cant forget is the episode 4 that nuer is die. the question in my mind i need an answer, Hope I find a link to for me to read and be enlightened.

    1. It did give some hints, please check out what one of the people who translated the dramas wrote on MDL Grey Rainbow page. She/he explained some things there that make sense, at least for me it does. It also explains about the hints given along the drama regarding N’s condition, with the time and so on (since P was gifting N watches). Do check out that and things will look different afterwards XD

It’s 3 in the morning and I just finished warching this series. I was heartbroken ’bout the ending, yes, but after reading the comments here and from other forums, it did make sense to me on what the writer would like to convey in this series. I looked up the observations and review from PaperPlanes like you said and it helped me lot on understanding the ending. I love everything about this series, the dialogue, the characters, the cinematography is very remarkable and is different to other Thai series that I have watched (I can’t help to notice that because I’m an Art major) and of course its plot for being not cliché like other BL series. I also love how they tackled the issues of LGBT and not just focused on the characters’ story. Other people should watch this series for them to understand more about the LGBTQ. I just hope that Nuer didn’t have to die in the end because I’m not a fan of that kind of ending 😦 but then again I realized that even though we can’t live forever, there’s one thing that can live forever and that is love ❤️ (corny 😂) thanks to this series I realized many things in life LOLOL

(sorry for the long post, i just can’t sleep 😁)

    1. Aww comments like this one make me really happy, I’m glad you enjoyed the show. It really does touch a lot of important thing and doesn’t give the usual fanservice.

  20. What was the cause of nuer’s death?

  21. I love this story but why did the writer killed Nuer? They should’ve killed Porsche too so that they really live happily forever. Anyways, I just finished this watching and I’m gonna watch it again to understand more. Great story tho!

  22. This is the best and the worst thing I’ve ever watched in my life! I love the 1st to 3rd but the ending really left me dumbfounded. Yeah the writers are just being realistic but why did they have to kill Nuer? I just finished watching it and I’m still kinda pissed about the ending but I’m gonna watch it again to understand more. 🙂

    1. Exactly, that’s probably the way we all think of this show, the best but the worst XD

  26. It was really entertaining. Full of wisdom specially when the monk speaks. I so loved the setting plus a very good story. But, i guess the writer should have it like in Timeline, another gay movie from Thailand. It could have been better if he didnt end it like it was in the movie. But the writer and director isnt half bad. They are good. I cried though and i cant keep thinking why was it ended like that. How harsh the director was. I believe that the story conveyed its lessons it want to impart in the in the current society. It not a CHEAP movie. Its not conventional gay movie, as we know common gay movie always had this kiss and sexual acts just to portray that you are watching a gay movie. I so recommend this movie for everyone. Its just that we always hope for a happy ending. job well done for the Cast and Crew of the movie. as of writing, i cant still understand why it had to end that way.. It was really a shocker to me.. Might i add this is my 2nd most favorite gay movie from Thailand after Love of Siam.

    1. Clearly not a cheap movie. As you said it, it was full of wisdom and turned out to be an amazing watch.

Ever since, I had a less interest in watching foreign movies. I only watch the American and Tagalog films but this one just caught my attention in the homepage of Youtube. I decided to watch it because I was curious then. As they say, “first time is always the best”. Now I can’t help but to believe it’s true.

Grey Rainbow opened my eyes and mind that love just don’t exist between opposite genders but also in same-sexes. It widens my perspective about true love and how society should react and accept it. We may have differences but have something in common – and that is the feeling of love. I wish Philippines will have its own genuine story to film and share, too.

I had a hard time moving on but hey, it was worth it. Thank you and congratulations to the cast and crew! 🙂

    1. Thank you for the comment, it was lovely reading it. It’s true indeed, looks like most of us had a hard time moving on.

Thank you. I watched it again and definitely got the same reaction- bursting into tears. I just don’t know but I love seeing Nut and Karn together. GR also taught me that pain is addicting.

PS: Are they a real life couple?

  28. I wonder how a gay Nuer first having a girl friend Jane? Is he a Bisexual or the story writer confuses that a normal person can convert to a gay person?

    1. Maybe he was bisexual from the beginning

  29. The best drama BL so far..everything is good, although I’m still confuse about why nuer died…but its the best drama..and I love nut karn too,,I hope they are cab being a couple forever!!

  30. I love BL dramas . N I didn’t regret watching this . I can say this is one of the best BL drama i have ever watched …it just made me cry many times . I don’t know what more to say I just loved it , it made my heart happy . Nut and kran love you guys yaar .❤❤❤

    1. Yes, indeed it was a great watch~

  31. Sigh… I was honestly on the verge of watching this BL drama. However, upon reading your comments and finding out what would happen in the end, I realise I can’t watch it. I easily get absorbed by a story and a story that concludes with death and sadness really won’t make me sleep for like a week or so.

    1. I think you should watch it even if the ending may not seem a happy one, the show overall was great.

      1. I agree, you still watch it. You will surely feel that you are part of the movie/cast. Laugh and cry with them.. And yeah, you will also mourn of the death and you will surely feel the emptiness and loneliness after he passed away…

  32. I watched this just few days ago and now I thinking of N and P day and night.

  33. I’ve just finished watching the movie. I’m from Philippines and I really love everything about the show. The cinematography was great as well as the portrayal of the actors. I also love the soft approach of the show about LGBTQ. And the showcasing of the rich culture of Thailand. Nuer and Porche are really cute together. Although it was really hard to move on because of the sad ending.

I tend to stay away from reviews before I watch a drama so I don’t read spoilers. Right NOW I am wrecked. My heart is heavy and my anxiety is pumping adrenaline through my body. I saw the clues at the beginning but totally forgot about them due to the wonderful nature of the series. I don’t understand what they were trying to convey with such a shocking event. I want to go back and watch it again, but i don’t think I can. I became too emotionally invested in their relationship and don’t know if i could see it right now knowing that I’m setting myself up for another heartbreak. Can someone please help me to understand… WHY???

    1. I understand exactlly how you feel. It was rather a heavy watch
