[Kdrama] ‘Family’ Kdramas recommendation ~ aka ‘When will the drama end?’ (Part 1)

Those who are regularly visiting my blog (it there are any) will know that I’m –somehow- into family dramas also known as 50+ dramas or “dayum when will this drama end?” Honestly I’m not even 100% sure why I like watching these kinds of dramas, I mean they are pretty long and time consuming, but I suppose I enjoy them because the characters are given a lot of time to develop, also around the main couple, the other characters have their own stories into the shows without being just filling characters.

Also compared with most Korean dramas, family dramas show the main couple before starting their relationship, during their relationship and marriage life likewise the members of their families.

Before reading the post, just a small reminder, please don’t let the large number of episodes of each drama affect your decision in a negative way, I promise these dramas are good.

First drama I want to recommend is actually the first family drama I saw which opened my desire to watch family dramas, is “Smile, You”.

Number of episodes: 45

Air period:  September 2009 ~ March 2010

Cast:

Seo  family

Lee Min Jung as Seo Jung In (main female character)

Lee Chun Hee as Seo Sung Joon (Jung In’s older brother)

Choi Jung Yoon as Seo Jung Gyung (Jung In elder sister)

Kang Suk Woo as Seo Jung Gil (the father)

Heo Yoon Jung as Gong Joo Hee (mother)

Kang family

Jung Kyung Ho as Kang Hyun Su (main male character)

Choi Bool Am as Kang Man Bok (grandfather – chauffeur of Seo family)

Chun Ho Jin as Kang Sang Hoon (father)

Song Ok Sook as Baek Geum Ja (mother)

Plot:  One day the Seo family loses everything they have, money, house everything, on top of that, on the day of Jun In’s wedding her husband-to-be leaves her during their wedding ceremony. Because the rich family lost everything, Kang Man Bok, their long time chauffeur, tells the Seo family to move into his house.

Although, the Seo family accepts to move into the Kang family’s house, they have to adjust living as middle class people – thing that may seem kind of difficult at first since the Seo family members were used to spend, spend and spend money.

During their stay into the house of the Kang family, both families have to overcome difficult times, also between Jung In and Hyun Su love blooms, but can their love be fulfilled since the older members of both families hate each other?

Since the older members hate each other, they give a lot of flavor to “Smile, You” making it into a lovely family drama with lots of funny and sad moments, please do watch it.

Another drama that I enjoyed is “Creating Destiny”

Number of episodes: 31

Air period: October 2009~January 2010

Cast:

Han family

Eugene as Han Sang Eun (main female character)

Kang Byul as Han Hyo Eun

Kang Nam Gil as Han Kyung Tae

Im Hyun Sik as Yoon Suk Joo

Kim family

Ki Tae Young as Kim Yeo Joon (main male character)

Kim Jung Nan as Kim Yoon Hee

Hwang Eun Hye as Kim Jin Joo

Choi Sang Hoon as Kim Taek Soo

Yang Hee Kyung as Park Geum Ja

Ban Hyo Jung as Lee Ok Ran

Lee Jung Hoon as Park Bok Man

Plot:  Hyo Eun lived most of her life in Australia together with her grandfather, father and sister. When she tells her family that she wants to marry her foreign boyfriend, the family doesn’t approve of the marriage. The fathers of the two families were actually good long time friends, because they promised each other to marry Hyo Eun and Yeo Joon, Hyo Eun’s father sends her back to Korea to marry Yeo Joon.

Because neither of the two –forced to marry- didn’t want to, Hyo Eun and Yeo Joon decide to make a contract between each other without their families knowing about it, and so the two start their married life.

Note: Eugene and Ki Tae Young actually married in real life after the drama ended

“Beautiful Life”

Number of episodes:  63

Air period: March 2010 ~November 2010

Cast:

Yang family

Kim Yong Rim as Mother

Choi Jung Hoon as Father

Kim Young Chul as Yang Byung Tae

Kim Hae Sook as Kim Min Jae

Kim Sang Joong as Yang Byung Joon

Yoon Da Hoon as Yang Byung Keol

Song Chang Ui as Yang Tae Sub (main male character)

Lee Sang Yoon as Yang Ho Sub

Nam Gyu Ri as Yang Cho Rong

Other people:

Lee Sang Woo as Kyung Soo (main male character)

Plot: The story is about the Yang family who is living in Jeju Island and their eldest son Tae Sub who is in a homosexual relationship with Kyung Soo. How will the families of the two males react when they will find out about their relationship? Will their relationship last? Watch it to find out what will happen because I AIN’T TELLIN’! !

During its airing, this drama faced a lot of problems because of the mothers in Korea (I think it was a mothers association) who thought that their boys will turn gay if they were to watch the drama….

“If my son becomes gay and dies from AIDs after watching ‘Life Is Beautiful’, SBS must take responsibility! ‘Life Is Beautiful’ has glamorized the culture of gays against what is realistically, healthy and proper for the citizens of Korea.”

Ojakgyo Brothers

Number of episodes: 58

Air period: August 2011 – February 2012

Cast:

Hwang family

Joo Won as Hwang Tae Hee (main male character – second son)

Kim Yong Rim as Madam Shim

Baek Il Sub as Hwang Chang Shik

Kim Ja Ok as Park Bok Ja

Jung Woong In as Hwang Tae Shik (first son)

Yun Woo Jin as Hwang Tae Pil (youngest son)

Park Hee Gun as Hwang Guk Soo

Baek family

Lee Young Ha as Baek In Ho

Jo Mi Ryung as Jung Yoon Sook

Uee as Baek Ja Eun (main female character)

Plot:  Baek In Ho faces bankruptcy, the only property he has is the land he rented to Hwang Chang Sik years ago. In Ho disappears ( if I remember correctly), when Ja Eun find out about the land she goes to Hwang family to ask it back but because the other family members, except Chang Sik, didn’t knew that the land was rented from her father, they try to kick her out, even so, Ja Eun persists and sleeps in a tent in front of the Hwangs house.

Ja Eun and Tae Hee fall in love but to see if the relationship of the two can last, watch the drama and you’ll find out, because, again I AIN’T TELLIN’!!

  1. Thanks for the recommendation! I only completed Ojakgyo Brothers so far (thanks to Joo Won) but I really love it because of the characters! I’ve heard good things about the dramas you recommended above and hopefully I’ll be able to watch them when I have free time :3

    1. Please do watch them when you have time, start with “Smile, You”, I’m sure you will love it, also the main male character is Jung Kyung Ho ( Doctor’s Son from Heartless City)

Anyway I do recommend you to watch “Shut up Family”, which is totally amazing.

    1. Do watch Beautiful Life, if you have the time. Although the plot is a bit unusual, you’ll like it.

One of the best family dramas I ever watched is “What happends to my family”… The plot is great. The characters as well and the story more than beautiful. If you like family dramas, it’s a Must. If you don’t like family dramas you will start to like them after watching this one.

    1. That was a good drama, I’m more of a fan of MBC family dramas but ‘What happens…” was good for a KBS weekend drama.

      Thanks for the comment ^^

  4. Sons of Sol Pharmacy/My Too Precious Sons is also a great drama. We can watch it with a light heart and can keep laughing. Each character is very different from the others. Its a must watch.

    1. I didn’t watch that one, but I will keep it in mind, thanks!

Thank you for your advices. I had already watched smile you! And I liked it very much. Now I think I’ll watch Creating destiny, if they play it on Viki (the only site with Italian subtitles) or if it doesn’t one of the others of your list.
    감사합니다!

    1. I’m glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment and hope you will like the others as well.

  7. You can add “All About My Mom” to your list, its a really good drama’
